PBC Update

I can attest that Giant has filled the space formerly reserved for Peanut Butter Crunch with Pirates of the Carribean cereal. A sad day in the cereal world. I doubt The Cap'n has the appeal to female eaters that Captain Jack Sparrow does. Which is depressing... Sometimes I just don't get women. Or grocery store cereal stockers.

I can attest that Peanut Butter Crunch is still present at Giant. Well, one box less than before, actually, since I bought one; and it was quite crunchy, though not as peanut-buttery as I would have liked. It's right next to regular Cap'n Crunch and Crunchberries. Captain Jack Sparrow is there as well, so perhaps there's room for two cereal captains after all.

I didn't see the "Discontinued Item" notice, but I was thinking with my appetite, not my wallet, and therefore didn't look at the price tag.

    Research, people, research!!!
I'm pretty sure Preanut Butter Crunch isn't being discontinued, at least not by Quaker Oats. It's been around for almost 40 years, and I couldn't find any press releases or anything about discontinuation.

Also, there was some debate on why the Cap'n isn't an admiral. Again, just a little research needed to get this from the cap'n's website:

"2. After years of adventuring, why isn't the Cap'n an Admiral yet?
It is a little known fact that the Cap'n WAS an Admiral at one time. After a tremendous outpouring from his fans, the Quaker Oats Company decided to promote the Cap'n. But Admiral Crunch quickly became bored with his desk job at Crunch Headquarters. And after a small mishap with the Crunch Berrie and Crunch Biscuit machine (at the hands of two recently promoted new co-Cap'ns) he decided that he was truly the best one suited for the role as the Cap'n. He soon requested his old position again, and he went back to being the best Cap'n that Crunch Headquarters has ever had. He is much happier now!"

That being said, I'm now quite intrigued by another of Quaker's cereals. 1960s space age products are awesome!

I remember Admiral Crunch, and he just wasn't convincing. And I have only seen the sign at my local Giant. As noted, I saw no evidence that this was anything but a local decision, though my love of PBC might have led to irrational fear of national implications. Also, I don't know who this shady anonymous character is, but at my Giant, Peanut Butter Crunch was quite gone on Monday.

As for Quisp, it looks like shell pasta. And it looks like awesome. Go aliens with helicopters on their heads!

Since it's still available *somewhere*, then, I think you should make a special trip to another grocery store and just stock up. Or buy online. Cause everything is available on Amazon.

Or, find your friendly neighborhood store manager and become one of those people who complains. At best, you get to keep your peanut buttered captain, and if not I still get a funny story about how you complained to your Giant representative. (Not to be confused with a giant representative.) Be sure to include conspiracy theories when you talk to them, please.

TThree important notes. First, $4.99 is a bit much for PBC, especially since it isn't eligible for free shipping. Not good for stocking up while on a budget. Second, thank you very much to the anonymous donor who contributed the entire portfolio of Cap'n Crunch products to small group snack this evening. Including a Peanut Butter version purchased at the same Giant the day after I found the shelves bare. Delicious, and proof that disaster has been averted. And third, there is an awesome manager at that Giant who is knowledgeable (at least about stock tips), engaging and garrulous, so I should ask him about it some day when I have spare time... The story will be well worth it.
