Sticking it to a much meaner Man

Last spring I posted this about a guy in DC who refused to sell his house to make way for a condo complex. But this, from today's NYT, is even crazier, especially since it's in China. The article keeps talking about the force of personality of the owner but never really goes into the specifics of her successful tactics. Mostly, I'm surprised the developer doesn't just go in and knock it down and sort out the details later. Keep it up Ms. Wu. Cause a stir. Progress without accountability to those you are displacing is just plain wrong. We have trouble with that even here in the US (see the ridiculous ruling in Kelo v. City of New London {and wimpy version}).

Gah! I can't remember what news source I saw that on yesterday, but I remember thinking it seemed right up your alley.

But the reason I comment is to try to defend our poor country's reputation re: eminent domain. Yes, there are some problems, but we're getting better. This from the Institute for Justice, the group that litigated the Kelo case:

"One year after what appeared to be a total victory for local governments allied with private developers, 25 states (out of the 45 that had legislative sessions this year) enacted legislation aimed at curbing the abuse of eminent domain. If governors sign additional bills that have already been passed by their state legislatures, that number will grow to 28—meaning that more than half the states will have passed eminent domain reforms."

That's pretty good considering how long it generally takes a legislature to get something done.

But the sad fact is, the Man pretty much always wins:
CNN coverage and a partial video of the demolition at BBC

The Post has an interesting take, which makes the deal sound shrouded in mystery and conspiracy. Darn you The Man!!!
